Labyrinth was a brilliant fantasy adventure movie, directed by Jim Henderson and starring the legendary David Bowie as Jareth, the Goblin King.
In the movie, a teenage girl called Sarah (Sarah Connolly), who feels put upon by her parents demands, wishes that the goblins would take away her baby brother. To her surprise, they do. The only way for Sarah to get her baby brother back is to find her way through the Labyrinth.
Along the way, Sarah comes across loads of great characters: Hoggle and Ludo, to name but two. The movie brings together three of the greatest creative forces of the 20th century: David Bowie, Jim Henderson and George Lucas (as producer). A sub plot for the movie is that Jareth actually loves Sarah.
Takings for the movie at the box office were disappointing, but a cult audience has grown up and Labyrinth is more popular today than ever. There’s loads of great songs in the film, but my favourite is Magic Dance, which includes the classic lines:
“You remind me of the babe!”
“What babe?”
“The babe with the power!”
“What power?”
“The power of Voodoo!”
“Who Do?”
“You do”
“Do what?”
“Remind me of the babe..”
