Catch Up Services

Once upon a time, if you didn’t set the video properly, you missed that favourite show that you wanted to see. Thanks to the internet, you don’t need to miss your favourite TV anymore thanks to the range of TV catch up services available.

BBC iPlayer
Initially just a  peer to peer  download service which required registration and was a little bit clunky, iPlayer now comes as a Flash based streaming viewer, allowing you to just visit the website and watch the show immediately online. Programs are available to view for a week after their airing.

ITV
ITV has a flash player embedded in its website. The good thing is that they offer live streaming of their channels, which is great. Finding programs that you want to watch after they have aired isn’t always easy though.

Channel 4’s 4oD
Like iPlayer, it started as just a download service but now you can watch shows “streaming” direct from the website. As well as current shows, there’s a huge archive of quality TV and film content you can watch - some of which requires payment. Even if you are “streaming”, you still need to register and install the application - download 4oD.

Labyrinth

Posted under Movies - Mar 1st, 08 - No Comments

Labyrinth was a brilliant fantasy adventure movie, directed by Jim Henderson and starring the legendary David Bowie as Jareth, the Goblin King.

In the movie, a teenage girl called Sarah (Sarah Connolly), who feels put upon by her parents demands, wishes that the goblins would take away her baby brother. To her surprise, they do. The only way for Sarah to get her baby brother back is to find her way through the Labyrinth.

Along the way, Sarah comes across loads of great characters: Hoggle and Ludo, to name but two. The movie brings together three of the greatest creative forces of the 20th century: David Bowie, Jim Henderson and George Lucas (as producer). A sub plot for the movie is that Jareth actually loves Sarah.

Takings for the movie at the box office were disappointing, but a cult audience has grown up and Labyrinth is more popular today than ever. There’s loads of great songs in the film, but my favourite is Magic Dance, which includes the classic lines:

“You remind me of the babe!”
“What babe?”
“The babe with the power!”
“What power?”
“The power of Voodoo!”
“Who Do?”
“You do”
“Do what?”
“Remind me of the babe..”

Open the box and out pops Pleo - your very own one week old robotic dinosaur. Stroke him, tickle him, play with him and watch him learn from his environment. If you want to be mean, pick him up by his tail and watch him squirm in your hand.

Pleo is a very cool toy, and updates will be available to download from the makers which will install new behavioural patterns on Pleo.

Apple MacBook Air

Posted under Computers - Jan 15th, 08 - No Comments

MacBook Air is the new notebook from Apple which measures only 2cm deep. The stunning computer was unveiled today by Steve Jobbs in his address to the MacWorld exhibition.

To help keep it slim and light, the MacBook Air doesn’t come with an optical drive.

According to the BBC, the MacBook Air will compete with slimline offerings such as those from Asus. Although with solid state storage laptops from Asus starting at around £200, and the MacBook costing £1200 in the UK, I’m not sure they are competing for the same slice of the market.
